About Me... |
|
Another summer has quickly come to an end and although I will miss the warm weather and reading by the water's edge I am looking forward to the new school year. This fall I will begin my thirty second year of teaching. WOW! It's hard to imagine but I continue to love what I do and look forward to the challenges ahead. Even after all that time, I find that my students are the ones who inspire me to keep on learning. I was a classroom teacher for many years teaching grades two, three and four before taking a reading interventionist position. I found that I needed to understand the process of how my students learn to read in order to better meet the wide range of reading ability I was experiencing in my class. I am a graduate of the University of RI with a Bachelor of Science and went on to continue my education at Rhode Island College obtaining a Masters in Reading. The one thing that I am certain of after all these years is that the reading process is very personal and complicated. Learning to read encompasses many different skills.(letter/sound relationships, background knowledge, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, fluency etc.) It is no wonder reading can be a challenge for some kids! I aim to provide a balanced approach to reading in order to try and discover the missing pieces of the puzzle that will assist students in becoming more confident readers.
